Chimurenga are incredibly proud to host PANAFEST, a web documentary, audio-video archive and online cartography, that chronicles continuities and breaks, samples and cuts that link four key moments of Pan-African encounter: Dakar ’66, Algiers ’69, Kinshasa ’74 and Lagos ’77.
A transdisciplinary research project, PANAFEST Archive focuses on four Pan-African festivals of arts and culture held in the 1960s and 70s: the First World Festival of Negro Arts (FESMAN - Dakar 1966), the First Pan-African Cultural Festival (PANAF - Algiers 1969), Zaire 74 (Kinshasa 1974) and the Second World Black and African festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC - Lagos 1977)
Built around 53 interviews conducted in English and French on three continents, PANAFEST is a collective, multiyear project led by Dominique Malaquais and Cédric Vincent in collaboration with Arghyro Paouri.
